What the hell happened to the monsters?
January 27th, 2009 by ambrose

I don’t generally like to advertise the fact that I am really good at making characters that are what I call “rules-general” who are more powerful than they ought to be. “Rules-general” means that a character takes feats that do not contradict thair background, but don’t neccesarily add to the character’s dynamics. Not really munchkining, but not exactly good practice either. Sometimes I do it in games, and all I can say is that there is a time and a place where these things are appropriate, and I wanted to share a successful venture into the realm of “near-powergaming.”

Adelai Martinsen

Human Wizard(Evoker, Prohibited: Enchantment) Level 13

Chaotic Good(Neutral Leaning)

Adelai had an uneventful and predictable life before he became an adventurer. He disliked his boring life, his boring family, his boring schooling, his drab existence. He was always told to have his life planned in advance, to avoid excitement at all costs, as if people predicted his later behavior. When he chose his vocation, he began a long standing plan in order to free himself from fate. He entered an academic wizard’s order and studied, never stating that his motive was purely to effect the causal nature of the universe. His perception is that imposing order the universe is inherently destructive.

Adelai hates Enchanters, and takes their craft as an insult to what he percieves as the nature of magic. He has no problem not using spells that control other living beings and will take pains to prevent others from doing the same. He veiws the competition between cognizant organisms as more sacred than any religious bond, and percieves Gods as having a cosmically unfair advantage against the interests of mortals.

Bonus Human: Metamagic Spell Trigger

3: Energy Substitution

Wizard 5: Craft Wand

6: Explosive Spell

9: Sudden Maximize

12: Greater Spell Penetration

Equipment

Headband of Intellect +3

Adelai’s combat strategy is flashy and unsubtle on the surface, but he actually takes pains to manipulate his surroundings while in combat. He frequently uses his Explosive Spells to move obstacles mid-combat, uses objects in the environment to cause damage when his spells are ineffective, which rarely occurs. He is also prone to moving opponents into hazardous positions using combinations of Sculpt Spell and Explosive Spell. He prefers to attack from a distance using area of affect spells that he casts using wands.

I remember you using the name Adelai when you played the gnome wizard in my game. If I can get that game started back up again, I remember you had a small wyrmling as a familiar and a spell stitched mouse who traveled along with you too. He also had a knack for using level 0 spells to great effect in almost any situation. I loved that version of Adelai.
